About

Hello, I am MaryAnn

I’m a home cook. Not a chef, not a nutritionist, not a doctor. I’m someone who refused to give up good food when I changed the way I eat. I’ve spent countless hours in my kitchen proving that clean, real ingredients can carry a celebration dinner, a holiday table, and everything from appetizers to dessert. Food that’s good for you and tastes so good you’ll want seconds.

How this started

A few years ago I was diagnosed with a fairly rare type of lymphoma. I chose to treat it naturally, at a hospital in Mexico, and part of that treatment is a complete change in how I eat. For the last three years, I’ve been creating an optimal environment for health within my body through how I eat: whole foods, as close to single ingredient as I can get them, and nothing processed.

My first thought was that dinner was going to be sad forever. I’ve always known how to cook from scratch. What I didn’t realize was that the ingredients I was using to make my homemade food had things in them that were making me sick. I had never thought to read the labels and know exactly what was going into my body.

It took a while, and a lot of mediocre dinners, before I stopped trying to substitute my way back to the old food and started cooking a different way instead. That is when it got good. What looked like restriction turned out to be an opening, into a whole world of real ingredients I had never bothered to get to know.

I am still healing. But I am healthier, and I feel better, than I have in as long as I can remember, healing in ways I never thought possible. A big part of that has been what I put on my plate: good quality food, organic, non-GMO, nothing processed. Cooking stopped being a workaround for what I couldn’t eat and became part of how I take care of myself. Every dish I bring to life at this table is part of how I am bringing myself back to life, too.

Why this site exists
I spent three years doing the research and the trial and error so you don’t have to. Everything I’ve learned is here: the ingredients, the recipes, and the tools that earned a place in my kitchen.

How things end up here

I read labels the way other people read the news. I tracked down which spice companies are actually clean, which grinder holds up after a year, and which jars seal properly and which ones just look like they do.

I have returned a lot of tools and thrown out a lot of test batches. What ends up on this site is what survived that process in my own house.

What this site is not

It is not medical advice and it is not a treatment plan. I am not qualified to give you either one, and I will not pretend otherwise. If you are working through something health related, talk to the professionals who know your situation. You can read the full disclaimer here.
