How this started
Our family changed the way we eat, and the change came with a list. No pork. No tomatoes. No vinegar or other harsh acids. Whole foods, as close to single ingredient as we could get them.
Reading that list for the first time, my first thought was that dinner was going to be sad forever. Half of what I knew how to cook started with a can of tomatoes or a splash of vinegar. The other half started with bacon.
It took a while, and a lot of mediocre dinners, before I stopped trying to substitute my way back to the old food and started cooking a different way instead. That is when it got good.
We did the research so the next person does not have to spend a year figuring it out at the stove.
The two of us
My husband Jason reads labels the way other people read the news. He is the one who tracked down which spice companies are actually clean, which grinder holds up after a year, and which jars seal properly and which ones just look like they do.
I cook, he researches, and between us we have returned a lot of tools and thrown out a lot of test batches. What ends up on this site is what survived that process in our own house.
What this site is
- Recipes we actually make on a Tuesday, written plainly.
- Spice blends you can mix yourself, so you know what is in the jar.
- A short list of tools and everyday products we tested and kept. Some of those links are affiliate links, and that is disclosed clearly.
- A cookbook, in progress, that pulls all of it together.
What this site is not
It is not medical advice and it is not a treatment plan. I am not qualified to give you either one, and I will not pretend otherwise. If you are working through something health related, talk to the professionals who know your situation.
